Abstract:

At first glance, property damage might strike one as lesser in severity than other interpersonal violations like physical or sexual abuse. However, as many DV survivors know, the experience of having your most prized possessions—some irreplaceable and having sentimental value, others expensive, like an automobile—destroyed by a partner, can be emotionally as well as financially devastating. In order to obtain fair compensation and justice for domestic violence victims who suffer property damage, author Kelly Weisberg recommends the more frequent use of the criminal courts and criminal mischief laws, which make it easier to prove these crimes.
