Abuse of animals intersects with family violence in many ways. Perpetrators of violent offenses against humans often start their criminal careers by abusing animals. Abuse of beloved pets can be a way to terrorize and abuse children and partners. And threats against animals in the household may prevent women from leaving abusive relationships. In this article, the author describes two new publications that specifically address animal abuse in the context of family violence. She also describes the effects of animal abuse on victims, animal abuse in Hispanic families, and animal abuse in welfare cases. Finally, the implications of animal abuse for professionals are also described.
