Abstract: 

One of the things that the criminal justice system has gotten right in recent years is to shine the light on the severe implications associated with the act of choking or strangulation. As it turns out, strangulation is nothing new and has been perpetrated by many abusers repeatedly, virtually under the nose of law enforcement offi cials, who until recently did not know how to look for its signs. However, times are now changing, and people are beginning to recognize, as Gael Strack and Casey Gwinn observe, that “strangulation is clearly the edge of homicide.” It also is one of the best predictors of whether or not a man will eventually kill his partner.
