Abstract: 

In her masterful critique of the response of our legal and social systems to the scourge of child abuse, author Camille Cooper articulates a long list of reasons why the American way of handling child abuse claims is failing miserably. This article, originally a chapter published in Volume 2 of the book Domestic Violence, Abuse and Child Custody published by CRI in 2016, describes the plethora of bad policies and practices that are prevalent in this country and that, as opposed to ensuring the safeguarding of abused children, put those children at high risk of being re-victimized, including a two-tiered family court system that creates multiple classes of child victims who, by virtue of their relationships to their abusers and sometimes their abusers’ relationships to the other parent, then receive a second-rate response from government. © 2015 by Camille Cooper.
