Abstract:

Author Allie Phillips, a former prosecuting attorney, is the Founder of Sheltering Animals & Families Together (SAT-F), a program that works with DV shelters to house companion animals on-site. She presents excellent rationales for the existence of this program: Humans and animals share a profound bond, one that yields many positive impacts for humans as far as physical and mental well-being. Phillips cites, for example, a 2016 study that revealed the influence of a person’s concern for the safety of companion animals in making the decision to leave a relationship with an abusive partner. She relates the sources of her inspiration to develop the SAT-F program, describes its evolution, and offers suggestions on how DV shelters can make use of this program to the benefit of their clients.
