Abstract:

In this article, Amy E. Bennett uses an attack on an 18-year-old suffering from schizophrenia and attention deficit disorder as a jumping-off point to explore the arena of violence perpetrated against persons with disabilities. The author notes the high correlation between disability and poverty, and she also observes that police, who are typically untrained and ill-equipped to deal with disabled persons, are more likely to injure such individuals when arresting them. She further points to the lack of public awareness as a barrier to ensuring the safety of this vulnerable population.
