Abstract: 

Chronic pain is a common reason why adults seek health care—and it costs billions of dollars each year. Child maltreatment dramatically increases the risk that adults will experience chronic pain. Moreover, high percentages of pain patients have histories of physical or sexual abuse. In this article, the authors describe the various pathways by which maltreatment during childhood increases pain for adults. They also present the implications of this research for clinical practice.
