Abstract:

On May 23, 2023, Tina Turner passed away at the age of 83 after a life that inspired multiple memoirs, a movie, a documentary, and a Broadway musical. Known as the “Queen of Rock and Roll,” she had been a trailblazer since 1960, when she began her musical career at age 17. For both better and worse, however, Tina’s personal story of how she overcame both an abusive childhood and an abusive marriage to become a global musical icon has been a defining aspect of her life and career. As such, it was only fitting that as the world mourned her loss, domestic violence survivors also took the time to honor her legacy outside of music. This article examines her story and how Tina Turner can serve as an inspiration for domestic survivors to share their own stories and leave their own abusive situations.
