Abstract: 

In conversations with colleagues I have recently become aware that we have not devoted sufficient space in these pages to covering how mental health and illness in children should best be conceptualized. This is an omission I would like to address, particularly since many of us are prone to commonsensical notions about children that new research findings have increasingly called into question.
