Abstract: 

One of the benefits for me in writing this column is that it gives me a chance to step back and ponder the things that I think are most important for the field of children’s mental health. I asked myself what my most important professional discovery has been over the last decade, either while I served at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) or during my subsequent activities here at Columbia’s Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health. Interestingly, I realized that my most important professional discovery has also been a deeply personal one, and it is one that I would like to share here.
