Abstract:

Accurately Assessing ADHD Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common childhood psychiatric disorder (Barkley, 1998; Olfson, 1992). A widely accepted prevalence rate maintains that an estimated 3% to 5% of the school-aged population is affected by ADHD (APA, 1994). However, as a reflection of the subjective nature of ADHD assessment protocols, estimates of the prevalence rate can actually vary from 1% to as high as 20% (Barbaresi et al., 2002; Gillis et al., 1992; Wolraich et al., 1996). The accurate assessment of ADHD therefore remains a controversial topic.
