Abstract:

Research indicates there is a high prevalence of students with co-occurring speech and language impairments (SLIs) and emotional and behavioral disorders (EBDs). Although researchers have attempted to provide language and communication suggestions for young offenders, little if any research has addressed students with concomitant language and behavioral problems. This paper provides correctional educators in institutionalized settings with suggestions to improve academic and social outcomes of students with co-occurring language and behavioral problems and focuses on behavior management challenges. The “easy to implement” behavioral suggestions follow the framework of the language and communication tips previously designed by Sanger, Nawrocki, and Snow (2015) for work with young offenders.
