Abstract:

Capacities to regulate physical and emotional experiences are core to the well-being and development of children and are one of the main reasons why caregivers seek the support of infant and early childhood mental health practitioners. This article describes regulatory capacities in infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, offering practitioners a way to better understand these capacities and explain them to caregivers. Supporting caregivers in meeting the needs of children who are struggling with these capacities is critical, and the article emphasizes caregivers’ needs and explains how the provision of services can support them.
