Abstract:
Schools remain the best environment for reaching children needing mental health care interventions, and cognitive-behavioral interventions are now widely recognized as among the most effective approaches for dealing with behavioral problems in youth, but delivering cognitive-behavioral based services in the school environment presents difficult challenges. Most cognitive behavioral practitioners are visitors within the school and, as such, outsiders to the culture that dominates the operations and activities of that school. Practitioners need to adapt their cognitive behavioral programs to the realities of school schedules, academic credit requirements, physical and equipment constraints, and unique school cultures without compromising program integrity. This article provides practitioners with a comprehensive guide for the delivery of cognitive-behavioral interventions in school settings. Keywords: Cognitive behavioral programs, school mental health, school culture, school structure, mental health counseling
