Abstract:
Cities and their local leaders are being relied upon, more than ever before, to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing the globe. The rise of Smart Cities presents the opportunity for metropolitan areas to use data and technology to improve decision making and create better outcomes. David Graham, keynote speaker at the 35th NFMA, discusses the thinking driving the transformation of cities, citing national trends and San Diego examples. Graham is the deputy chief operating officer for the City of San Diego. This article is based on his keynote address at the 35th Annual Conference of the National Federation of Municipal Analysts held in Coronado, California, May 29–June 1, 2018.
