Abstract:

At a qualified plan investment conference in 2006, economist Simon Benninga, a concurrent professor at the Wharton School of Finance and Dean of the Faculty of Management at Tel Aviv University in Israel, began his remarks by stating that there is one guarantee in retirement plan investing: “that this year there is one year less than there was last year for participants to save.” Despite the overwhelmingly obvious nature of this comment, it is just as clear that this message continues to fall on deaf ears. While regulatory bodies in the post-Enron investment world focus on further mandatory disclosure, diligent plan sponsors continue their often futile attempts to communicate the need for earlier and larger deferrals.
