Abstract:

The last half of the 20th century saw significant shifts in the workplace that included a greater emphasis on service and knowledge- based occupations. Significant increases in productivity and economic growth were driven by innovation, technology, and an educated workforce. These changes coincided at least in part with the demographic bulge of baby boomers that also included an influx of working women in greater numbers than before. The next 20 years will see the retirement of “boomers” and older workers from the workforce, and with it, a change in some basic concepts, laws, and practices relating to retirement.
