Abstract:

This article discusses information reporting requirements which might be imposed on cryptocurrency exchanges. The IRS has expressed a frustration with the lack of reporting by cryptocurrency exchanges to date, yet has done little to clarify what type of reporting is required. In the absence of further guidance, cryptocurrency exchanges might consider voluntarily providing Forms 1099-B for cryptocurrency transactions.
