Abstract:

The Government Accountability Office reviewed the SEC’s oversight of self-regulatory organizations (SROs) in a report released in November 2007. The SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) inspects SRO regulatory programs, conducting routine inspections of key programs every one to four years, and special inspections as needed. The GAO recommended a number of changes, but one of the principal recommendations, that the SEC make greater use of internal audit reports of the SROs, is being implemented in 2008.
