Abstract:
Risk factors for suicide vary depending on race or ethnicity, age, gender, family interactions, and ongoing or emergent stressful situations. One million people worldwide die of completed suicide every year, and among young adults in the United States age 10-24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. This article discusses some of the risk factors, makes recommendations to help readers recognize the signs of suicidality, and identifies resources available to teens and caregivers.Keywords: suicide risk factors, suicidality, adolescent health, depression, self-esteem, mental health, stigma, social networks
