Abstract:
This article explores how everyday language can be used within a restorative framework to help parents whose teen children are struggling with drug abuse and addiction to reintegrate in a healthy way with their families, schools, friends and communities. Counseling teens and their families trains them to use informal restorative techniques, such as affective statements and questions, working with teens to make decisions (as opposed to making decisions for them), and addressing possible backsliding by teens after treatment. These techniques can successfully shepherd teens and families through the transition back home from a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program and court-ordered periods of juvenile probation. Keywords: substance abuse, addiction rehabilitation, restorative practices, social discipline window, family counseling, affective statements
