Abstract:

Many school systems are discovering that by combining principles of positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS) and Restorative Practices (RP), it is possible to achieve positive and sustainable improvements to a school’s “climate.” Climate refers to the extent to which members of a school community feel welcomed, supported, engaged and respected. Drawing on her experience implementing PBIS and RP in the Kansas City School system, Dr. Petersen provides concrete examples of ways in which a school’s physical characteristics, social attributes, and academic factors—the multiple tiers that support student well-being and success—can be re-imagined and reshaped to function better. Prevention and intervention strategies like “Talking Circles” create an environment where students feel valued and safe so that learning can take place.
