Abstract: 

The Colorado legislature recently passed a landmark child custody bill that revolutionizes the state’s family court response to domestic violence and child abuse. The catalyst for the pioneering legislation was a number of troubling court rulings that placed survivors of domestic violence and their children at risk. One such troubling case involved the experiences of a survivor named Julia after she left her abusive husband and sought protection for her son Anthony and herself. This article discusses the details of the case and the legislation.
