Abstract:

Part of the challenge of the natural aging process is overcoming loneliness. For some, a pet can be a source of joy and companionship. However, pet care can also overwhelm an infirm or ill elderly person, and then both animal and human may suffer. Attempts to address this issue are complicated. Further muddying the waters are cases of hoarding, and how to address them before it’s too late and dozens of animals are left uncared for, homeless, and a burden on family members.
