Abstract:

Philip Marshall, grandson of Brooke Astor, filed a petition on July 21, 2006, claiming that his father, Anthony Marshall, had been engaging in elder abuse of Mrs. Astor as well as using her fortune to enrich himself and his wife. The initial complaint came from Mrs. Astor’s longtime butler, Christopher Ely, who was fired in January 2005, when he made complaints about her care. A nurse and two nurse’s aides, hired by Ely for Mrs. Astor’s care, also joined in the complaint. At the filing of the petition, Annette de la Renta, a longtime friend, was awarded temporary guardianship, and Mrs. Astor has been moved to Westchester. This article discusses the background and nature of the case.
