Abstract:

As reported in a previous issue of VED, the United Nations has embarked upon a process of developing a new treaty on the rights of people with disabilities. The purpose is “to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.” Since the last issue was published, at its Eighth Session from August 14 to 25, 2006, the Ad Hoc Committee adopted the draft text of the Convention, including an optional protocol, as a whole, without a vote. Further drafting work remains to be done before the proposed treaty is presented to the General Assembly.
