Abstract:

“Safety In a Storm,” the fourth annual New York City Elder Abuse Conference, was held on June 2, 2009, at the New School Institute for Retired Professionals. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the conference, it was sponsored by the Jewish Agency for Services to the Aged ( JASA), the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention (Hebrew Home at Riverdale), the New York City Department for the Aging and Human Resources Administration and Department of Social Services, the Carter Burden Center for the Aging, The New School Institute for Retired Professionals, Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service, and the David Berg Center for Law and Aging. This article summarizes that meeting, its sessions, topics, and recommendations. It includes a sidebar, “Techniques for Interviewing the Cognitively Impaired”.
