Abstract:
By definition, nursing home residents are individuals with severe, ongoing, and often multiple health problems. Most residents are cognitively impaired; many have chronic illnesses (e.g., arthritis) or acute illnesses (e.g., cancer) that cause pain. In March 2010, the Senate Special Committee on Aging held a hearing in response to a DEA crackdown on nursing home prescribing practices. This article summarizes the DNA’s case. Part II, in a future issue, examines the issue from the other point of view: pharmacists, nursing homes, and physicians treating nursing home residents. Keywords: nursing home residents; Senate Special Committee on Aging hearings; Senior Financial Empowerment Act of 2009
