Victimization of the Elderly and Disabled

Abstract: 

In part, this article summarizes recent and upcoming conferences and events dealing with elder and disabled abuse. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) and the United Nations World Health Organization, was marked on June 14, 2013 with an event at the UN. Other events include: Georgia Southern University Elder Abuse Conference, Consumer Voice 37th Annual Conference; National Consumer Law Center’s Consumer Rights Litigation Conference, 3oth Annual APS Conference. 87-year old Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, sued her literary agent, Samuel Pinkus, for taking advantage of her age and infirmity. Gerontologists at Wayne State University (Detroit) have created a profile of victims of elder abuse, and its link to depression. Hidden camera video shows fatal abuse of Oklahoma nursing home patient Eryetha Mayberry--- including having a rubber glove stuffed down her throat--- resulting in passage of Protect our Loved Ones Act. Link of dementia and violence in Waverly, Pennsylvania (Weatherwood Nursing Home) case of patient Carl Smith, accused of killing fellow patient Margaret Lechleitner. A New York film festival showing of the film Willowbrook, showing medical experiment injecting hepatitis into patients, dating back to 1947 at mental health facility. $240 million award to disabled men in Texas case involving Henry’s Turkey Service, a processing plant. US Congressman Ted Deutsch (Dem, FLA) introduces bipartisan bill to create federal advisory office to protect elders from abuse. Santa Clara (CA) case where conservator restricts access to client in assisted living facility. Not Dead Yet organization urges elder abuse professionals to speak out on risks of legalizing assisted suicide.
