Abstract:
Disability increases the risk that a person will suffer violent victimization. In a review of recent cases, this article furnishes some surprising statistics about the extent and nature of elder and disabled victimization that illustrate key issues for protective service professionals and advocates at the intersection of criminal law and elder maltreatment. In some cases, the category “maltreatment” also includes maltreatment of others by elderly and/or disabled persons. Keywords: statistical risk tables; Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey; State of Washington v.
