Abstract: 

This articles summarizes current HIV/AIDS prevalence data among United States prison and jail populations, explores transmission vectors prior to and during incarceration, describes the unique prevention opportunities posed by incarceration, and presents areas for further clinical and research attention. Because of the exceptionally high rates of HIV infection among—and transmission between—substance abusing offenders, this is an especially important issue for professionals who work with this subset of the correctional population.
