Abstract: 

Many individuals working in the field of drug abuse and addiction have minimal formal education. This has given way to an increasing need for the reevaluation of professional goals. Ideally, individuals should be educated to provide services that are broad enough in scope to encompass cultural values, economic differences, and variations in personalities and that allow for the holistic treatment of substance abusers. This article presents a review of relevant literature and calls for better training for substance abuse treatment staff.
