Abstract:
Individuals leaving incarceration who have a history of psychiatric disorders, with or without co-occurring substance use disorders, have unique needs for reentry assistance. This paper focuses on the problem of community reentry assistance for prison inmates with psychiatric disorders, including those with substance disorder comorbidity. It discusses mental illness and incarceration and issues in reentry planning, and it proposes an increased role for community mental health centers in meeting the mental health needs of formerly incarcerated individuals. Keywords: mental health; reentry
