Abstract: 

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice that has been found to be both effective and cost-effective in reducing alcohol use and related problems in settings outside the criminal justice system. This article reviews the research literature on SBIRT and outlines the planning, staffing, implementation, and management of SBIRt in a jail setting.
