Abstract:

Whether the drug court model can live up to the idealistic promises remains to be seen. Realistically, in order for drug courts to achieve significant reductions in substance abuse and recidivism, they must adhere to certain research-based principles on effective interventions (e.g., matching client treatment programs on an individual level with risk, need, and responsivity levels). This article discusses several research based principles that drug courts should consider in order to increase their effectiveness. Recommendations for implementing these principles are also included.
