Abstract:

In this article, the authors advocate for cultural sensitivity in prison programming. As would be expected, the composition of the population within the nation’s prisons is a reflection of the cultural diversity of the United States. This results in an extremely challenging problem for the corrections administrators charged with keeping the public safe from inmates, the inmates safe from each other, and providing treatment programs that will prepare the inmates for a return to society. In this piece, the authors define culture and then explain why cultural sensitivity is beneficial to prison programming.
