Abstract:
The Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services, Inc. (CASES), which provides services throughout New York City, aims to increase the understanding and use of community sanctions that are fair, affordable, and consistent with public safety. In 1999, CASES created the Nathaniel Project, the first alternative to incarceration (ATI) program in New York City to serve mentally ill, adult, felony offenders. The organization did a recidivism analysis to document the lasting benefits of their alternative to incarceration programs for felony offenders. This article details the benefits of such programs, including reduced recidivism rates and other positive outcomes. Keywords: alternatives to incarceration
