Abstract:

In March 2003, Joe Taylor, Assistant Director of Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) Secure Schools, requested that the agency’s Research and Development section undertake a project to identify what secure school staff know about the juveniles they supervise. The purpose of the study was twofold. First, on an aggregate level, Taylor wanted baseline data on what secure school staff know about the juveniles they supervised. Second, presuming one facility has staff that is more knowledgeable than the others, he wanted to know why they were more knowledgeable. The purpose of this article is to present the findings of the staff knowledge project, which measures staff knowledge of factors such as substance abuse history and gang affiliations for individual juvenile inmates.
