Abstract:
Since the latter half of the 20th century, there have been several attempts at punitive reforms. Examples include alternatives to incarcerations, reparative penalties, intensive supervision programs, intermediate sanctions, sentencing guidelines, and restorative justice. They were little evaluated, however, especially after the initial ebb of excitement about them had simmered down. Largely, they are assumed as an “addon” to other sanctions, or as a suitable penalty for the most minor of offenders. In this article, Immarigeon reviews a recent examination of intensive supervision probation, a practice with a rich history of its own. Keywords: alternatives to incarceration; prison reforms
