Abstract: 

Human rights standards are thoroughly tested in prisons and jails. By enforcing limitations on prisoners’ freedom, while still being bound to protect their inherent dignity, corrections officials are at the forefront of human rights efforts. This article does the following: Offers an overview of the international human rights instruments addressing prisoner rape; describes how these laws have been applied to facilities in the U.S.; and Examines U.S. laws that embrace human rights standards and prohibit sexual violence in detention.
