Abstract:

As both the number of incarcerated individuals with serious mental illness increases and the prison population rises, the need to integrate mentally ill offenders successfully into the community also increases. The reported incidence of serious mental illness in incarcerated individuals ranges from 17% to 60%. As a result, the Connecticut Department of Corrections (DOC) established a mental health Parole unit. In his 2007 annual report to the Commissioner of the DOC, the Director of the Parole Division stated that the mental health unit was the most successful of all the units in his division.
