Abstract:
Recent literature in the area of sex offender treatment has reported on the benefits of shifting treatment from a confrontational/avoidance model (traditional relapse prevention) to a supportive-collaborative/approach model (self-management, good lives). Kirk et al. relay the experiences of men receiving sexual offense–specific treatment as treatment programs have shifted from confrontational and relapse prevention–focused to a working positively/good lives model. The inmate-participants in the supportive approach program responded favorably to the change. As a case study, the authors use the inpatient Healthy Lives Program (iHeLP) and explain the program’s benefits and how it continues to evolve to yield maximum benefits. Keywords: sex offender treatment; iHeLP
