Abstract:
After a 30 year period of mass incarceration, New York State has taken significant steps to reduce imprisonment and support effective inmate reentry. These practices have been effective, but there is still work that needs to be done to reverse the impact of the overly punitive policies of the past. Rosenthal et al. describe the four major challenges identified by Governor Cuomo's Work for Success Initiative that need to be addressed to enhance reintegration practices. These include aligning prison-based employment programs with the current job market, connecting people being released with relevant community-based programs and supports, building and supporting community organizations to serve the formerly incarcerated, and dismantling laws and regulations that create lifelong barriers to community reintegration. Keywords: Reintegration; Vocational training; community support; Alternatives to incarceration (ati); barriers to education
