Abstract:

“Prisoner reentry” is a hot topic, if we want to understand the reentry experience and how to improve reentry outcomes, we need to know what happens well before prisons release inmates. This overview looks at 3 recent three more recent books including pre-, post- and in prison reentry strategies in “Prisoner Reentry in the Era of Mass Incarceration” by Daniel P. Mears and Joshua C. Cochran, surmounting psychosocial obstacles for incarcerated black males transitioning back into the community in “Rethinking Prison Reentry: Transforming Humiliation Into Humility” by Tony Gaskew, and a quantitative study assessing the impact and influence of Turning Point, a cognitive intervention program in “Offender Reentry and Cognitive Intervention: Propensity Score Matching Utility for Outcome Assessment” by Ken Balusek. Three noteworthy international reports-two recent psychological studies published in the December 2014 issue of the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology and a 2009 South African Report suggest other improvements in reentry practices.
