Abstract:

This article introduces a new internal classification system designed for prisons and large jail systems. Classification is an essential function in corrections: while having a good classification system does not guarantee security, program effectiveness, or low recidivism, bad classification all but guarantees that none of these important objectives will be achieved. The present examination focuses on these important, useful, and inherently more complex internal classifications, and introduces a new approach to their design and use. The authors have all been engaged in the development and testing of a new classification system as staff researchers for Equivant (formerly Northpointe Institute). The IC, still in validation but nearing completion, will be called COMPAS IC Beta in this article.
