Abstract:

Criminal justice interventions for reducing recidivism among DUI offenders typically focus on applying sanctions or providing treatment, and many courts already implement specialized sanctions geared toward increasing the supervision and services provided to these offenders. Furthermore, alcohol is just one of many types of substances that drug court programs attempt to address among offenders on their caseloads. DUI courts, therefore, appear to be a reasonable extension of the drug court model to improve the existing supervision and treatment practices of many courts that deal with large dockets of DUI offenders. Nationwide, there are currently 81 designated DUI courts and another 249 hybrid DUI /drug courts (Huddleston et al., 2007).Hiller et al. examine DUI courts and their effectiveness.
