Abstract:

Nicole Godfrey, Professor at Denver University’s Sturm College of Law, reviews “Mental Health and Punishments: Critical Perspectives in Theory and Practice,” edited by Paul Taylor, Sharon Morley and Jason Powell, a comprehensive survey of social science literature about the realities of punishing people with mental illness. Professor Godfrey’s review focuses on three themes: the responsibility of having power over the vulnerable; recognizing the mental harms caused by incarceration; and giving voice to the voiceless.
