Abstract:

The authors of this article view the group therapy experience as a fundamental agent of change. As a component of general staff training and development, the authors facilitate groups that replicate the therapeutic group process we offer to clients (e.g., inmates, halfway house residents). In these parallel process groups, the goal is to encourage participants to view sessions as a forum where they can safely express pertinent issues, both professional and personal, through identification, relational connection, and creative expression. Undergoing and internalizing such restorative experiences increases the likelihood of participants replicating such an approach with the clients they serve.
