Abstract:

COs and police officers have a great deal in common on use of force issues. The violence inflicted on inmates in correctional settings does not often include a shooting, but it does include positional asphyxiation and, more generally, invites force when no force whatever was appropriate or legal. This article explores the parallels between law enforcement and corrections with respect to use of force and the need for stricter oversight and accountability, and better training for uniformed officers.
