Abstract:

The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors recently issued a very interesting technical report entitled, “The Vital Role of State Psychiatric Hospitals” (July 2014). In this Report, the authors eschew the older notion of the hospital-as-home and elect to view the hospital as a transitory, last resort for the very ill or dangerous and tied to an overall mental health continuum of care. In this review the author will excerpt a portion of the Report that he believes is the best portion of its contents in terms of grasping its major objectives.

Keywords: history of the development and evolution of state psychiatric facilities; Olmstead model; coordinated community services; Life skill development activities; work force development; careoriented environment; assessment tools; emotional self-management
